River Response to Anthropogenic Modification: Channel Steepening and Gravel Front Fading in an Incising River

چکیده
While most of the world's large rivers are heavily engineered, channel response to engineering measures on decadal century and several 100 km scales is scarcely documented. We investigate Lower Rhine River (Germany-Netherlands) measures, in terms slope bed surface grain size. Field data show domain-wide incision, primarily associated with extensive narrowing. Remarkably, has increased upstream end, which uncommon under degradational conditions. attribute observed two competing mechanisms: bedrock at boundary increases over part alluvial reach compensate for reduction net annual sediment mobility, narrowing reduces equilibrium slope. Another striking feature advance flattening gravel-sand transition, suggesting its gradual fading due an increasingly reduced difference between gravel sand reaches.

Do gravel bed river size distributions record channel network structure?
[1] Bed load sediment particles supplied to channels by hillslopes are reduced in size by abrasion during downstream transport. The branching structure of the channel network creates a distribution of downstream travel distances to a given reach of river and thus may strongly influence the grain size distribution of the long-term bed load flux through that reach. Here we investigate this hypoth...
متن کاملSubsurface flow in lowland river gravel bars
Geomorphic and hydraulic processes, which form gravel bars in large lowland rivers, have distinctive characteristics that control the magnitude and spatial patterns of infiltration and exfiltration between rivers and their immediate subsurface environments. We present a bedform-infiltration relation together with a set of field measurements along two reaches of the San Joaquin River, CA to illu...

15 صفحه اولTransient response in longitudinal grain size to reduced gravel supply in a large river
[1] The first extensive dataset on subaqueous bed material grain size in a large river subject to reduced sediment supply is investigated alongside bathymetry, modeled flow, and sediment flux. Results suggest that following sediment supply decline and a shift to a finer sediment supply, the gravel‐sand transition (GST) in fluvial systems extends and subsequently migrates upstream. The non‐abrup...
متن کاملAutomatic Detection of Gravel Bars in a River Channel from Airborne Lidar-derived Dtm
Airborne Laser Scanning or LiDAR data are widely used nowadays in river valleys for topography and hydro-morphology. However, the large data sets of unprocessed 3D point clouds require some challenging treatment and end-users may prefer to deal with DTMs (Digital Terrain Models) derived from LiDAR surveys. Without any complementary data (such as field survey or photographs) detecting position a...
